The American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Program is a nationally recognized training and certification designed to prepare lifeguards to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies in pools, waterparks, and waterfront environments.

To participate in the Lifeguard Certification Course, students must be at least 15 years old and complete a required swimming skills test.

This is a blended learning course.

  • ONLINE: The online portion MUST BE completed before the start of instructor-led, in-person classes. The online portion is comprised of 16 modules and takes approximately six hours to complete.
  • IN-PERSON: The instructor-led portion is held at TAC and is ~24 hours, over two or three days, depending on schedule.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate for Lifeguarding (including Deep Water), Shallow Water Lifeguarding, or Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding. Certification includes CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid. Certification is valid for two (2) years.

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Recertification Course is designed to refresh knowledge and skills. To participate in the Lifeguarding Recertification class, you must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification, and certification expired by no more than 30 days.

This is a blended learning course.

  • ONLINE: The online course MUST BE completed before the start of instructor-led, in-person classes.
  • IN-PERSON: The instructor-led portion takes place at the Triangle Aquatic Center.
  • Total length of course

Upon successful completion of this course, participant’s certification will be renewed for another two years.

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Course trains certified lifeguards to teach and certify others to become certified lifeguards. The training covers how to use Red Cross materials, conduct classroom and in-water teaching, evaluate skills, and follow official policies and procedures.

The course trains instructor candidates how to teach all of the following courses and/or modules: American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Lifeguarding Blended Learning, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Water Park Skills, CPR/AED For the Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training

To participate in the Lifeguard Instructor Certification Course, students must be at least 17 years old and have a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

This is a blended learning course.

  • ONLINE: The online course MUST BE completed before the start of instructor-led, in-person classes.
  • IN-PERSON: The instructor-led portion takes place at the Triangle Aquatic Center.
  • Total length of course: approximately 22 hours

Upon successful completion of this course, participant will be a certified Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI).

  1. Visit the Red Cross digital certificate webpage at this link
  2. Fill in the email address used when registered and click FIND to view your certifications
  3. If nothing appears, try the Search By Name & Date option
  4. Enter your first and last name (used when registered)
  5. Select the year you completed the class. (Month is optional)
  6. Click FIND to display your certifications
  7. Use the VIEW & PRINT button at the bottom of the page, or DOWNLOAD to save a PDF copy.
